Two shelters in the heart of Mumbai’s red light district aim at rescuing and caring for the children of women who are being used in prostitution, as well as other children abandoned on the streets. These shelters become a “safe haven” for children, protecting them from the dangers of the street, or otherwise hiding under the bed while their moms “work” in the evening.
The shelter is a safe and fun place for them to receive basic necessities like food and medical care, as well as a loving and nurturing environment essential to their well-being.
Dubbed “children of the night,” these young victims lack formal education. BTC’s main goal is to motivate and empower them to receive a solid education which will enable them to become productive members of society, rather than continuing in the cycle of prostitution and/or poverty. The shelter runs a successful tutoring program which enables many children to return to school and further their education.
BTC also provides the monetary resources needed to purchase uniforms and books, a prerequisite to admission. As of now, almost every child at these centers now attends school and receives a solid education.
